SSI Open Water Diver Course The SSI Open Water Diver course is the first level of recreational scuba diving certification. It provides students with the knowledge and skills needed to dive safely and confidently with a certified buddy to a maximum depth of 18 meters (60 feet) anywhere in the world. The course consists of three complementary parts: Academic training, completed online or with an instructor, covers the fundamental principles of scuba diving, including pressure and buoyancy, breathing underwater, equipment use, dive planning, safety procedures, and marine environmental awareness. Confined water training (in a pool or shallow water) allows students to learn and master essential diving skills, such as buoyancy control, mask clearing, regulator recovery, and emergency procedures in a safe and controlled environment. Open water dives, typically four dives, give students the opportunity to apply their newly acquired skills in real diving conditions under the direct supervision of an SSI Instructor. Throughout the course, the emphasis is on safety, comfort, and enjoyment while exploring the underwater world. SSI's teaching philosophy is based on progressive learning, allowing each student to develop skills and confidence at their own pace. Upon successful completion of all required knowledge sessions, confined water skills, and open water dives, students earn the SSI Open Water Diver certification, which is recognized worldwide. This certification allows divers to dive with another certified diver, within the limits of their training and experience, to a maximum depth of 18 meters (60 feet). The SSI Open Water Diver certification is also the gateway to continuing education, including specialty courses such as Deep Diving, Navigation, Perfect Buoyancy, Night Diving, and many other advanced recreational diving programs.
